Turn everyday outdoor discoveries into a learning adventure your child can proudly share.
The Backyard Naturalist is an adult-guided, hands-on nature project for ages 5–8. Across ten gentle missions, children compare leaves, watch birds and tiny creatures, test paper seed travelers, build a plant model, and explore weather, shadows, and habitats. Their discoveries become a child-made illustrated field guide and a small family Naturalist Museum.
This is about noticing, wondering, and caring—not knowing every species name or filling pages with perfect writing. Children can draw, point, count, circle options, speak, or dictate while an adult reads and supports them. No backyard is necessary: a permitted green space, sidewalk tree, familiar houseplant, or safe window view can work.
Ten guided missions, one meaningful finished project
-
A Naturalist Notices — choose a safe place, make a little map, and describe two real details.
-
Leaf Detectives — compare visible leaf shapes, edges, and veins without pulling living leaves.
-
Seeds on the Move — predict and test three paper travelers indoors, keeping the drop method fair.
-
Bird Watch — watch quietly, sketch, and tally one main action for each sighting.
-
Bug & Critter Inspectors — observe small neighbors from a distance without catching or disturbing them.
-
Plant Living System — make a paper plant model and distinguish visible parts from explanations of their jobs.
-
Weather & Shadows — record the sky safely, then return to the same shadow object at least 30 minutes later.
-
Homes & Habitats — map two safe places and compare the features actually visible.
-
Nature Detective — separate “I see,” “I think,” and “I wonder,” then invite a museum guest.
-
Build & Open the Naturalist Museum — assemble a field guide, arrange three exhibits, and share the discoveries.

A proud final share—without disturbing nature
Your child chooses five of six field-guide themes, adds truthful captions and dates or locations, and uses a sixth entry only if desired. They create three paper-based museum exhibits from drawings, notes, safe photos, and models. One family member at home can be the guest. Children may talk or point while an adult reads their dictated words. No camera or public sharing is required.
A zero bird count, an unknown name, or “no visible shadow” is useful evidence. Paper experiments and reference models are labeled honestly rather than presented as outdoor sightings.
Flexible pacing and simple printing
Most missions take about 25–45 minutes. Mission 7 has 30 minutes of active work plus a separate wait of at least 30 minutes. Mission 10 has a 45–65-minute Build and a separate 20–30-minute Open. Try one or two missions a week, or shorten, split, repeat, and pause as needed.
Print US Letter, Actual Size / 100%, single-sided. The complete Studio and Kit total 43 sheets; the Adult Guide can stay digital. Covers may be color, while interiors work in black and white. Print by mission and reuse references using the guide’s print plan.
Family-provided supplies and adult guidance
Gather paper, pencils, crayons or colored pencils, a folder or binder, clipboard or firm book, adult-handled scissors, tape or glue stick, scrap paper, a timer, and a ruler, measuring tape, or consistent child handspans. The shadow mission uses a flowerpot or a ruler secured upright in clay on paper. Outdoor clothing, drinking water, and adult supervision are needed outdoors. Magnifiers, binoculars, and cameras are optional—not required purchases.
An adult guides throughout, chooses safe permitted places, checks weather and local hazards, and handles cutting and assembly. Look without capturing wildlife, removing nests, lifting habitat cover, tasting unknown plants, or pulling living leaves. Unknown plants are look-only. Never look at or toward the Sun. Paper seed travelers are released—not thrown—indoors with fans off and never outdoors as litter. Safe window views and indoor alternatives keep the learning flexible.
Notice more. Wonder more. Care more. Then share what you discovered.
