A priceless museum object has vanished—but the evidence is still in the room.

In CSI: Mystery Detective — The Case of the Missing Starstone, your child becomes the lead investigator in a complete, hands-on museum mystery. Across ten connected investigations, they examine records, compare fingerprints and fibers, measure a scaled footwear impression, decode a secret message, reconstruct a timeline, evaluate witness statements, analyze photographs, and build a conclusion supported by evidence.

This is more than a collection of worksheets. It is a carefully sequenced case that asks students to observe closely, think critically, revise their ideas, and explain how they know. Each new clue adds another piece to the mystery without giving away the answer, allowing the student to experience the satisfaction of solving the case through their own reasoning.

Designed for curious investigators ages 9–12

The project works especially well for homeschool enrichment, project-based learning, independent study, co-op activities, and children who love mysteries. Most student work can be completed independently, while clear support labels tell adults when help or private clue control may be useful.

Ten connected investigations

  1. Secure the Scene — separate observations from assumptions and form a first hypothesis.
  2. Fingerprint Lab — compare simulated prints while considering context and limits.
  3. Trace Evidence — interpret a supplied fiber-analysis summary safely.
  4. Follow the Footprints — measure a scaled impression and evaluate relevance.
  5. Crack the Code — use cipher logic to reveal a hidden reminder.
  6. Build the Timeline — sequence records and calculate elapsed time.
  7. Witness Statements — corroborate claims and evaluate reliability.
  8. The Photograph — analyze visual evidence closely.
  9. Solve the Case — rank evidence and write a supported conclusion.
  10. Close the Case — create a report, prevention system, evidence board, and final briefing.

What the complete download includes

  • Start Here Parent Guide — 10 pages of printing directions, pacing, materials, evidence-release instructions, safety notes, and support guidance.
  • Student Case Book — a 44-page learner-facing investigation book.
  • Sequential Evidence Pack — 26 pages of records, simulated forensic clues, witness statements, photographs, optional envelope labels, evidence-board pieces, presentation cards, and a completion certificate.
  • Private Answer Key + Case Solution — 10 pages of exact answers, acceptable variation, misconception checks, staged hints, and mastery criteria.

Academic enrichment meets practical capability

Students practice observation, measurement, classification, sequencing, elapsed-time reasoning, cipher logic, source evaluation, claim-and-evidence writing, revising a theory when facts change, process improvement, record keeping, and oral presentation.

Age-appropriate forensic simulations

The case contains no violence, weapons, blood, or frightening material. Fingerprint, fiber, and footwear activities are clearly presented as classroom simulations. Children interpret supplied information rather than performing chemical or heat tests.

Simple setup—no special science kit required

Use a printer, standard paper, pencil, colored pencils or markers, scissors, clear tape, glue, scrap paper, and a centimeter ruler. Optional items such as envelopes, a clipboard, string, or poster board can add atmosphere but are never required to solve the case.

Print the files. Release the evidence. Let your investigator lead the case.

Do I need a special science kit?

No. Everything needed to solve the mystery is supplied in the printable files. At home, gather only ordinary materials: paper, pencil, colored pencils or markers, scissors, clear tape, glue, scrap paper, and a centimeter ruler.

The fingerprint, fiber, and footwear activities are age-appropriate classroom simulations. Students interpret supplied evidence; no chemicals, heat tests, laboratory equipment, violence, or frightening content are involved.

What families are saying

Everything really is in the box

“I’ve tried other open-and-go programs, but Capable by Design is the first one that has genuinely felt complete. The instructor guides, student workbooks, living books, and hands-on materials were already organized for us. I could open the guide, read the scripted lesson, and begin without spending the night before printing pages or gathering supplies. Having the entire 36-week year arrive in one box took an enormous amount of pressure off me.”

Scripted without feeling stiff

“I was hesitant about using a fully scripted curriculum because I worried it might feel unnatural. Instead, the script has given me confidence and made teaching much easier. It tells me exactly what to say, what to do, which materials we need, and approximately how long each lesson should take. I can follow it closely on busy days and adapt it when I want to. It provides structure without taking away the personal connection between parent and child.”

— Cailyn B. Homeschool parent

A thoughtful balance of academics and childhood

“Capable by Design feels like it was created by parents who understand what homeschooling actually looks like. The academics are substantial, but the program doesn’t rely on endless worksheets or unnecessary busywork. Rich books, hands-on activities, nature study, practical skills, and focused lessons keep my child involved in the learning. I appreciate that the goal isn’t merely to complete another grade—it’s to raise a capable, confident child who is being prepared for life.”
