Capable Roots: Elementary Life Skills is a complete 144-day digital life-skills course for ages 6–9. Through 36 hands-on Life Skill Labs, children practice the everyday skills that help them become more confident, responsible, safe, thoughtful, and increasingly independent.

This is the standalone life-skills portion of the Capable by Design elementary curriculum. It is designed for families who want a thorough, open-and-go life-skills course without purchasing the complete physical curriculum box. Capable Roots works alongside any homeschool curriculum, private-school program, public-school experience, co-op, or family learning plan.

Two flexible ways to teach it

Both options use the same complete 144-day course. With the One-Year Plan, teach life skills four days per week for 36 weeks and complete the full course in one school year. With the Four-Year Plan, teach life skills one day per week for 36 weeks and complete one of the four course parts each year, allowing the curriculum to grow with your child across ages 6–9.

How each Life Skill Lab works

Every four-day lab follows a purposeful mastery cycle. On See It day, the child learns what the skill is and why it matters. On Try It day, the child practices the steps with clear choices and examples. On Use It day, the child applies the skill to a new situation. On Capable Quest day, the child creates a reusable portfolio tool and demonstrates what they can do.

Each lesson begins with an 8–10 minute Morning Mindset and affirmation, followed by a 20–30 minute practical lesson. Clear instructions, examples, safety boundaries, checklists, and built-in mastery checks make the course easy to follow without lesson planning or guesswork.

What children learn

Personal responsibility and daily routines; caring for belongings and shared spaces; listening and clear communication; asking for help appropriately; boundaries, permission, and personal safety; friendship, teamwork, and conflict resolution; problem-solving and handling setbacks; home, food, and community safety; privacy and safe decision-making; caring for living things; basic money handling, saving, wants, and needs; thoughtful choices; goal-setting and planning; helping at home; and contributing to a community.

Four parts, one complete course

  • Part 1: Know Me, Care for Me — confidence, emotions, routines, belongings, and knowing when to try, ask, or stop
  • Part 2: Kind Words, Helpful Hands — listening, communication, permission, fair play, apologies, teamwork, and projects
  • Part 3: Safe, Ready, and Resourceful — personal, home, food, travel, privacy, and community safety
  • Part 4: Wise Choices, Growing Independence — money, saving, needs and wants, persuasion, goals, planning, service, and reflection

Designed for ages 6–9

Ages 6–7 may have directions read aloud while still making the choices, drawing, circling, explaining, and demonstrating the skill. Ages 8–9 can usually work more independently and may complete the writing extensions. Drawing or dictation is welcome whenever handwriting would get in the way of practicing the actual life skill.

Digital product: no physical materials, books, or manipulatives are shipped. Download the PDF after purchase, save it to your computer, and print the complete course or only the pages your child needs.

Is this a full curriculum?

No — Capable Roots is the standalone life-skills portion of our elementary curriculum. It does not include reading, writing, math, science, history, living books, or the hands-on materials from a complete Capable by Design grade box.

It is designed to fit beside any elementary academic program. Teach it four days a week as a focused one-year course, or one day a week across approximately ages 6 through 9.

From real homeschool families

What families are saying

Everything really is in the box

“I’ve tried other open-and-go programs, but Capable by Design is the first one that has genuinely felt complete. The instructor guides, student workbooks, living books, and hands-on materials were already organized for us. I could open the guide, read the scripted lesson, and begin without spending the night before printing pages or gathering supplies. Having the entire 36-week year arrive in one box took an enormous amount of pressure off me.”

— Hanna L. Homeschool parent

Scripted without feeling stiff

“I was hesitant about using a fully scripted curriculum because I worried it might feel unnatural. Instead, the script has given me confidence and made teaching much easier. It tells me exactly what to say, what to do, which materials we need, and approximately how long each lesson should take. I can follow it closely on busy days and adapt it when I want to. It provides structure without taking away the personal connection between parent and child.”

— Cailyn B. Homeschool parent

A thoughtful balance of academics and childhood

“Capable by Design feels like it was created by parents who understand what homeschooling actually looks like. The academics are substantial, but the program doesn’t rely on endless worksheets or unnecessary busywork. Rich books, hands-on activities, nature study, practical skills, and focused lessons keep my child involved in the learning. I appreciate that the goal isn’t merely to complete another grade—it’s to raise a capable, confident child who is being prepared for life.”
